It is also every bit as beautiful, if not more,  than I imagined it would be. Those tiny sterling frames hold very precious cargo…. my little guy Owen, who was adopted after ten long years of trying to start a family and two failed adoptions.

We live in Houston and we were supposed to leave town to be there for his out-of-state birth the day that hurricane Ike hit our area last year. Our trip was delayed for several days because of the heavy damage to our area, and then 2 hours before we left town, we also found out from his birthmother that our baby was going to be a boy and not a girl!!! We left Houston that evening in the dark, since there was no electricity in Houston at the time, and returned 2 weeks later with the light of our lives!

His adoption has been final for one year this month, National Adoption Month, by the way! I am so grateful to you for giving me a very special way to commemorate such a big event in our lives. I will treasure it always, and Owen is enjoying it too!! He holds it in his little hands and points at his pictures everyday! I have also had several compliments on it in just a few days. I have given out your web address to two of my friends who already can’t wait to place an order!!!

Mark is our most recent employee, joining the Kathy Lo Rocks family only two months ago. He brings with him an Industrial Design background, which has been helpful in designing our latest flower collection. His skills in designing castings and 3D modeling have been a great advantage to the team.

After his long journey west from New England six years ago, Mark is happy to be living in San Francisco and working with us. He enjoys the easygoing atmosphere at Kathy Lo Rocks studio; especially the large windows when they are flooded with sunshine.

You can find Mark, while outside of the Kathy Lo Rocks studio, dancing to ‘80s music and researching gizmos and gadgets. He is a big fan of 3D designing for toys.

“Dear Kathy,

My mother has three sisters, Susie, Margie and Cathy and a half-sister Frances.  They have been through a lot of loss in their lives recently and are very close.  I wanted to do something really wonderful for my aunts because they had been through so much.

I sent a picture of my mom with her family when they were very young and the last picture that was taken of all of them (including their younger sister Frances) together with their mother. These gifts were presented to them last week at the party with all their family around them (nieces, nephew, grandchildren and spouses).  They started crying with emotions when they saw the picture of them with my mom, their beloved sister.  It made the whole party and I am sure my aunts will never take their photo charm off.

Kathy Lo was wonderful to work with.  I was crazy with nervousness to get these gifts in time and wanted them to be perfect.  Kathy sent them to me overnight without my even asking because it was important to me and they were perfect.  All her staff is so kind and a pleasure to work with.  It’s rare these days that you get to work with a company that puts their customers first.

Dear Friends,

This letter is about my dear friend Alice. It’s her story, and it’s also a request for help. I know not everyone can offer what we need, but please do me and my friend the kindness of reading to the end before deciding.

Alice is a wonderful person. She is a brilliant environmental attorney who has worked as a civil servant for 22 years. Her work focuses on toxic waste cleanup, improving the environment and the health of communities around the country. She is also a devoted friend and mentor of children.

Sadly, Alice has also suffered kidney failure nearly all her life, stemming from a misdiagnosed and mistreated case of strep throat at age seven, which severely damaged her kidneys. From that point forward, her kidneys declined further until at age 18 she was put on dialysis, subjecting her to 18 hours a week of a painful and sometimes debilitating process.

Later that year her mother was able to donate a kidney, which gave Alice 16 years of good health but ultimately wore out; a new kidney from her brother (pictured below, with Alice) has given her the last 17 years. (Her mother and brother are both in excellent health!)

In return for this gift, she has made it her life’s work to help others. She has made a career of improving our environment, and she serves on a board to counsel and educate other kidney patients so they understand their treatment options. Alice has also lived the healthiest lifestyle possible in hopes of prolonging her own life.

Unfortunately, her current kidney is nearing failure. While she lives on a very low and ever-diminishing percent of kidney function, Alice is on a five-year transplant wait list for an organ from a recently-deceased person.

Her current kidney will not last those five years. Without a transplant, she will return to dialysis, which is only 10% as effective as a functioning kidney, leaving many side-effects. It’s also very painful and poses a very high risk of infection (this hospitalized her at 18). As hard as it was for her when she was young, it will be even harder now.

Put simply: Alice needs a new kidney, and we hope you will consider being tested to be a donor.

I know this is a big request. But I make it on behalf of someone who devotes every day of her life to making a difference in the world.

Information About Donating

The initial testing for donation is simple; it usually requires some interviews and a blood test.  Costs are covered by Alice’s insurance. The surgery for removing a donated kidney is now laparoscopic, and causes little scarring. It does not require a lengthy hospital stay and the costs of donation are covered. You don’t need to be a perfect match to donate a kidney to Alice.  Technology, and advances in matching donors and recipients, now permit any healthy person to donate. The long term implications of donation were recently the subject of an article in the New England Journal of Medicine which concluded that survival and the risk of kidney failure in carefully screened kidney donors appear to be similar to those in the general population. A 2007 article in the New York Times noted that donation is a personally fulfilling experience.  In a review of published surveys on donor attitudes by Mary Amanda Dew, a psychologist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, about 95 percent of donors say they would do it again. Most experience a boost in self-worth and enjoy feelings of deep purpose: “People who actually do become donors, usually regard it as a supremely gratifying experience; they were given a blessed opportunity to save a life.” Sally Satel, Desperately Seeking a Kidney, N.Y. Our Creative, multi-talented Goddess Oona, originally hails from the Hilo side of the big Island of Hawaii. Oona  spices up the klo rocks team with her fantastic fashion sense, original ideas, and strong jewelry making background.

While producing perfect jewelry pieces daily, Oona reminisces about camping out on the beaches of Hawaii to see the sunrise and climbing Mauna Kea. She loves working for klo rocks because of the:

I must just tell you…that I ordered a necklace last week.  Not only did it show up faster then I expected but the end product was exactly what I was looking for! I had done a lot of research to find this type of necklace/pendant for months. when I finally can across your website I was excited.
